Driving Inclusive Innovation in TVET Across ASEAN: KryaPro’s Gender-Transformative Journey

In 2025, KryaPro marked significant progress in advancing Gender, Diversity, and Inclusion (GDI) within Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across ASEAN. Through a series of design-driven workshops implemented in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Indonesia, KryaPro is helping reshape how vocational institutions understand and address inclusivity—turning insights into actionable change.

What is TVET and How can GDI be applied?

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) refers to education and training programs that equip individuals with practical skills, technical knowledge, and competencies required for specific trades, industries, or professions. Unlike purely academic pathways, TVET focuses on hands-on learning and workforce readiness—covering areas such as engineering, information technology, hospitality, manufacturing, and more.

To remain relevant and equitable, TVET systems must go beyond technical training by actively integrating Gender, Diversity, and Inclusion (GDI) into their structures and practices. This includes:

  • Designing gender-responsive curricula and learning materials

  • Ensuring equal participation and representation across programs

  • Creating safe and inclusive learning environments

  • Embedding institutional policies that address systemic bias and barriers

By embedding these concrete practices, TVET institutions can better serve diverse populations and contribute to more inclusive workforce development.

Milestone 1: Building Empathy-Driven Foundations in Semarang

The journey began in Semarang on 28–29 July 2025, where KryaPro facilitated a two-day, in-person workshop for TVET practitioners. This session focused on introducing Design Thinking as a strategic tool to tackle GDI challenges in vocational education.

Using the Discovery and Define phases of the Double Diamond framework, participants:

  • Explored real-world challenges related to gender and inclusion

  • Conducted empathy-driven analysis of stakeholder experiences

  • Developed research-based problem statements grounded in actual institutional contexts

Rather than jumping directly into solutions, the workshop emphasized deep understanding—ensuring that future interventions are both relevant and impactful.

This milestone laid a critical foundation: shifting mindsets from assumption-based decision-making to human-centered problem framing.

Milestone 2: From Insight to Action in Bandung

Building on the initial groundwork, KryaPro continued the initiative with Milestone 2 in Bandung (1–3 October 2025). This phase moved beyond problem definition toward solution development and strategic implementation.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from two polytechnics, focusing on:

  • Identifying institutional barriers to GDI integration

  • Co-creating practical, context-specific solutions

  • Developing actionable strategies aligned with each institution’s realities

Through a facilitated Design Thinking process, participants engaged in:

  • Structured exploration of systemic challenges

  • Collaborative ideation and prioritization

  • Translating insights into implementable initiatives

This phase demonstrated a crucial evolution—from understanding problems to designing solutions that are both feasible and sustainable.

Enabling Inclusive, Human-Centered TVET Transformation

At the core of KryaPro’s work is a human-centered, impact-driven approach that positions stakeholders as active co-creators of change. By leveraging Design Thinking, KryaPro ensures that solutions are grounded in real needs, shaped by institutional realities, and designed for practical implementation.

This approach not only strengthens problem-solving capacity within TVET institutions, but also accelerates the integration of Gender, Diversity, and Inclusion (GDI) into everyday practices. By transforming institutional challenges into opportunities for innovation, KryaPro contributes to the development of more inclusive, adaptive, and future-ready TVET systems across ASEAN.

The milestones in Semarang and Bandung represent more than isolated workshops—they are part of a growing movement to reimagine vocational education in ASEAN.

KryaPro remains committed to:

  • Scaling gender-transformative initiatives

  • Strengthening institutional capacity

  • Driving meaningful, long-term impact in TVET ecosystems

As the region continues to develop, inclusive innovation will be a defining factor—and KryaPro is positioning itself at the forefront of that transformation.
